Last week, a Memorandum of Understanding was signed between the Institute of Seismology and Atmospheric Physics of the Academy of Sciences of Turkmenistan and the Institute of Geology, Earthquake Resistant Construction and Seismology of the National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Tajikistan.

The cooperation program within the framework of the Memorandum includes dozens of scientific areas of mutual professional interest of both parties, director of the Institute of Seismology and Atmospheric Physics of the Academy of Sciences of Turkmenistan Guljemal Saryeva reported on the pages of the “Neutral Turkmenistan” newspaper.

Tajikistan is an example of successful development in the field of earthquake research. Considering the rich experience of cooperation between seismologists of Tajikistan and the countries of Central Asia, their experience in assessing and reducing seismic risk for large cities and in organizing regional seismic monitoring is interesting. No less pressing are the issues of predicting the consequences of strong earthquakes and organizing effective measures to reduce social and economic damage using various innovative technologies, assisting in the rapid deployment of seismic monitoring systems in the epicentral zones of strong earthquakes.

“Turkmenistan is currently also successfully carrying out work in the field of seismological research. And our scientists are always happy to promote productive partnerships with their colleagues. In this direction, special tasks are associated with the signing of a Memorandum with the Institute of Geology, Earthquake Resistant Construction and Seismology of the National Academy of Sciences of Tajikistan”, - says G. Saryeva.

In the near future, regular consultations are planned between the parties on a bilateral basis on important aspects of professional interaction. Cooperation, in particular, will include: exchange of visits of scientists and specialists, scientific and technical information; formation and implementation of joint developments, projects and development programs; expert and consulting support in the implementation of new research methods, as well as technical assistance, including the use of unique tools and equipment.

Joint scientific publications, training and certification of scientific personnel, internships, participation in scientific conferences, symposia, and seminars of mutual interest are also planned.

Scientific and technical cooperation will also be carried out in the areas of studying the nature and mechanisms of development of natural and man-made seismic phenomena and active geodynamic processes; carrying out complex geological and geophysical, geodetic, electromagnetic, geochemical and other studies of endogenous and exogenous processes; searching for earthquake harbingers; conducting joint research into the consequences of strong earthquakes.

The memorandum signed by two specialized scientific institutions of Turkmenistan and Tajikistan certainly gave a start to further strengthening and expanding international cooperation between specialists from both countries, notes the director of the Institute of Seismology and Atmospheric Physics.

Let us remind that the Memorandum of Understanding was signed within the framework of the visit of the National Leader of the Turkmen people, Chairman of the Halk Maslahaty of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov to the Republic of Tajikistan.
