Turkmen specialists continue to work on the construction of a new 35-kilometer Akina-Andkhoy railway in Afghanistan, the groundbreaking ceremony of which was held in July last year. This was stated at a meeting of the Cabinet of Ministers of Turkmenistan.

According to Deputy Prime Minister Bayramgeldi Ovezov, on June 16-17, during the visit of the Turkmen delegation to the neighboring country, a contract was signed between the Agency "Turkmendemiryollary" and the railway organization of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan for the construction of the Akina-Andkhoy railway line.

In accordance with the document, the Agency "Turkmendemiryollary" and the Afghan company "Venco Imtiaz Construction Company, LLC" signed a sub-contract to perform a certain amount of land work and provide materials for the construction of this railway.

"The railway line Akina-Andkhoy will open new opportunities for the economic development of neighboring countries, strengthening its small and medium business, the release of Afghan products to the world market", – said at a Cabinet meeting, President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov.

The head of Turkmenistan emphasized that the construction of the railway on the Afghan territory is carried out at the expense of the Turkmen side and our human and material resources are used.

The Kerki-Imamnazar-Akina railway, commissioned with the participation of the heads of state in autumn 2016, is the first link of the Asian international transport corridor. Until the opening, the entire volume of cargo transported between Turkmenistan and Afghanistan was delivered via the Serhetabat-Turgundi and Kelif-Termez-Mazari-Sharif railway crossings.

"In the future, this railway line is planned to be extended to the border with Tajikistan with further access to the States of the Asia-Pacific region. Thus, thanks to the constructive Turkmen-Afghan interaction, the neighboring country has a real opportunity to become an important link in the international transport corridors that run through the territory of Central Asia in the directions North-South and East-West," Berdimuhamedov said.
