Turkmen wrestlers are preparing for the Yarygin tournament in Krasnoyarsk

The 37th International Ivan Yarygin Memorial Freestyle Wrestling Tournament will be held in Krasnoyarsk from January 29 to February 1. The Turkmenistan team is among the participants.

Turkmen wrestler Alp Arslan Begenjov, in an interview with Russian journalist Arip Ibragimov, said the team is preparing for the tournament. According to him, about six athletes from Turkmenistan will participate in the competition. Alp Arslan Begenjov is currently training in Dagestan with his compatriot Dovlet Myradov.

The memorial tournament for two-time Olympic champion Ivan Yarygin is considered one of the most prestigious events of the season. The competition was founded during the legendary wrestler's lifetime and was first held in 1990 in Abakan. Since 1991, the tournament has been held in Krasnoyarsk, Yarygin's hometown.

The Yarygin Cup ranks second in importance in Russia after the national championship. The tournament results are used to select the national team for the European Championship.

Three-time Olympic champion Buvaysar Saitiev holds the record for most victories in the tournament, with six. Among active athletes, Zavur Uguyev holds the best record, with five victories.

In 2026, wrestlers from more than 20 countries are expected to participate, including Azerbaijan, Belarus, Bulgaria, Georgia, Egypt, India, Kazakhstan, China, North Korea, Cuba, Kyrgyzstan, Mongolia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Türkiye, Uzbekistan, South Korea, and Brazil.

The competition program includes all major weight categories for men and women. The opening ceremony is scheduled for January 30.
