A new study from the University of Auckland has revealed an unexpected relationship between men's intellectual development and the quality of their romantic relationships. The results of the work, published in the authoritative publication Personality and Individual Differences, add a new argument in favor of the importance of cognitive abilities for personal well-being, "MIR 24" reports.

Scientists have long established that high intelligence correlates with success in various areas of life - from academic achievements to professional growth. Research also shows that people with advanced cognitive abilities show slower rates of aging and a reduced risk of mortality. It is noteworthy that divorce statistics turn out to be more favorable to couples with high intellectual potential.

American researchers decided to deepen our understanding of the role of intelligence in romantic relationships. To do this, they conducted a large-scale study involving 202 men aged 18 to 65 years old who were in relationships lasting at least six months. Participants underwent comprehensive testing, including an assessment of intellectual development and a detailed questionnaire.

The results of the study turned out to be very revealing. Men with higher IQ scores showed markedly healthier patterns of behavior in relationships. In particular, they:

Less likely to resort to verbal aggression and insults

Avoided manipulative practices

Did not seek to dominate their partner

Less likely to show signs of psychopathy

However, scientists emphasize an important nuance: the discovered connection is correlational, not cause-and-effect. In other words, high intelligence can serve as an indicator of a potentially more harmonious relationship, but is not a guarantee.
