The southeastern United States has been hit by the devastating effects of hurricane “Helene”, which has surpassed all natural disasters since the infamous hurricane “Katrina” in 2005. The Category 4 hurricane, with winds reaching 225 km/h on the Florida coast, left behind destruction in several states, daily.afisha.ru reports with reference to The Guardian, “BBC” and Associated Press.

According to the latest data, the storm has killed more than 215 people, with hundreds still missing. North Carolina suffered the most damage, accounting for more than half of the deaths. Although the hurricane weakened to a tropical storm on October 4, its effects continued to be felt in Georgia, both Carolinas, Virginia, and Tennessee.

The disaster caused record flooding, leaving millions without power and tens of thousands without water. “It was like the apocalypse”, - said Nicole Rojas of North Carolina.

Rescue efforts are complicated by the closure of hundreds of roads. In some hard-to-reach areas, even mules are being used to deliver aid. More than 6700 troops from 16 states are helping to eliminate the aftermath.
