The current President of the United States, Joe Biden, announced his decision not to participate in the upcoming elections. He emphasized that his priority is to fulfill his current presidential duties until the end of his mandate, RBC.RU reports.

Biden argued his decision with concern for the well-being of the country and the interests of the Democratic Party. As a successor, he proposed the candidacy of his vice president, 59-year-old Kamala Harris, who expressed her readiness to run for the post of head of state.

It's a rare occurrence In American politics for a sitting president to abandon his re-election bid in the midst of a presidential campaign. The last such case occurred more than half a century ago, when in 1968 the 36th US President Lyndon Johnson made a similar decision.
