6. Scientists from the University of Texas have found a giant reservoir of water at a depth of about 3,2 km off the coast of New Zealand. The underground “sea” is contained in the sediments and rocks of a lost volcanic plateau. The site where the water was discovered is located in a vast volcanic formation that was formed 125 million years ago by the eruption of a lava plume. Experts believe that underground water deposits make it possible to relieve tectonic stress in the New Zealand fault through so-called slow earthquakes, when sections of the earth's crust move slowly and release seismic energy gradually.
