Paintings by Renoir, Cezanne and Matisse stolen from Italian museum

Three paintings by renowned European artists were stolen from a private museum in northern Italy. The robbery at the Magnani-Rocca Foundation, located 20 kilometers from Parma, occurred on the night of March 22-23, but was only revealed last week, according to the BBC.

The robbers stole Pierre-Auguste Renoir's "Fish," Paul Cézanne's "Still Life with Cherries," and Henri Matisse's "Odalisque on a Terrace." The works' combined value is estimated at several million euros.

According to police, four masked men participated in the robbery. They broke down the front door, entered one of the ground-floor rooms, and exited the building through the museum garden. The entire operation took less than three minutes. Law enforcement described it as well-planned and organized.

Presumably, an alarm went off, preventing the thieves from completing their plan: one of the paintings they intended to steal remained in place. Investigators are currently reviewing surveillance footage from the museum and adjacent buildings.

The Magnani-Rocca Foundation was founded in 1977 and houses the collection of art historian Luigi Magnani, which also includes works by Dürer, Rubens, Van Dyck, Goya and Monet.
