Sanae Takaichi officially became the 105th Prime Minister of Japan

Japan's parliament on Wednesday elected Sanae Takaichi, chairwoman of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party, as prime minister. She becomes Japan's 105th head of government, Xinhua reports.

The decision was made during an extraordinary parliamentary session. In the lower house, Takaichi was appointed without a second round of voting. In the upper house, a second round was required—after no candidate secured a majority in the first—and Takaichi also received the most votes.
