The Spanish authorities have begun installing a new road sign on the country's motorways. The sign, numbered S991f, informs drivers about the operation of a radar system that automatically monitors the maintenance of a safe distance between vehicles.

According to the current traffic regulations in Spain, the minimum distance between cars on motorways and two-way roads must be at least 70 meters. For violating this requirement, drivers face a fine of 200 euros and the deduction of 4 points from their driving license.

In the event of a traffic accident, failure to keep a safe distance can result in a fine of up to 500 euros and a loss of 6 points. In the Spanish driving licence system, 8 to 12 points are awarded when you obtain your licence, which can be increased for impeccable driving or reduced for violations. When the balance of points reaches zero, the licence is withdrawn.

The new radar system operates on the principle of speed cameras. The Spanish General Directorate of Road Traffic explains that the installation of such signs is planned primarily on sections of roads with a historically high accident rate.

As the Spanish newspaper La Razón notes, the new road sign causes the greatest difficulties for motorists compared to other signs. Drivers express dissatisfaction and are interested in the practical aspects of accurately calculating the distance in heavy traffic conditions.
