Global temperatures will continue to break records between 2025 and 2029. This is stated in a new report by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) of the UN, RIA Novosti writes.

“Global climate projections show that temperatures are expected to remain at or near record levels over the next five years, increasing climate risks and impacts on society, the economy, and sustainable development,” the document says.

According to the WMO forecast, the average annual global surface temperature of the Earth will be 1.2-1.9 °C above the 1850-1900 average each year. The probability that at least one year during this period will be warmer than the hottest year on record (2024) is 80%. There is also an 86% probability that at least one year will exceed the warming threshold of 1.5 °C relative to pre-industrial levels.

WMO Deputy Secretary-General Co Barrett said: “We have lived through the ten hottest years on record. Unfortunately, this WMO report does not foresee any relief in the coming years, meaning negative impacts on economies, daily life, ecosystems and our planet will increase.”

The UN also expects sea ice to continue to decline in the Barents, Bering and Okhotsk Seas. The May-September 2025-2029 precipitation forecast predicts wetter conditions in the Sahel, northern Europe, Alaska and northern Siberia, but drier conditions in the Amazon.
