Public servants in the Japanese city of Ginan have won $67,000 in compensation after being forced to arrive at work five minutes early, pravilamag.ru reports, citing the South China Morning Post.
The dispute began in February 2021, when former city mayor Hideo Kojima ordered all city hall employees to arrive at work by 8:25 a.m. instead of the required 8:30 a.m., without providing any justification for the change.
The employees expressed dissatisfaction with the new rule and demanded that the extra time be counted as overtime. In December 2023, they filed a formal complaint with the Fair Trade Commission, demanding that they be compensated for overtime hours for a three-year period.
In November 2024, the commission ruled in favor of the public servants, ordering the city government to pay compensation in the amount of $67,000.
