The world's first comprehensive law regulating the use of artificial intelligence technologies has come into force in the European Union, reports daily.afisha.ru with reference to CNBC.

Although the legislative framework was approved back in August 2024, key restrictions and requirements only came into force on February 2, 2025. The new rules set clear boundaries for the use of AI and provide serious sanctions for violating them.

The regulation prohibits the use of AI technologies that may pose a potential threat to the rights of citizens. The ban included social rating systems, real-time facial recognition technologies, as well as AI systems that classify people according to various criteria. In addition, the law restricts the use of manipulative AI technologies.

There are significant fines for non-compliance - up to 35 million euros or 7% of the company's annual turnover globally. The specific amount of the penalty will be determined by the nature of the violation and the scale of the business.

According to the EU's head of public policy, Tasos Stampelos, the current implementation of the law is just the beginning of the regulatory process. He noted that the effectiveness of compliance will depend on additional regulations, standards and guidelines that will follow the main law and detail the mechanisms for its implementation.
