On February 8, a delegation of parliamentarians from Turkmenistan took part in the annual parliamentary hearings of the Inter-Parliamentary Union, which were held at the UN headquarters in New York. The event was dedicated to the topic “Ending Conflicts: Recipes for a Peaceful Future,” writes Centralasia.news.
In their speeches, the President of the UN General Assembly, Dennis Francis, and the President of the Inter-Parliamentary Union, Tulia Axon, emphasized the importance of finding ways to prevent and resolve conflicts through parliamentary diplomacy. Particular attention was paid to the role of national parliaments in promoting peace and government accountability.
More than 300 parliamentarians and experts from around the world took part in the event. Global challenges to peace and security were discussed, as well as the contribution of parliamentarians to the development of the Pact for the Future and the creation of a peacebuilding network.
On February 9, a delegation from Turkmenistan spoke as part of the segment “New threats to peace and technology.” In its statement, the delegation presented practical initiatives of Turkmenistan to strengthen peace and trust at the global and regional levels, including through inter-parliamentary diplomacy.
In particular, the results of the International Year of Dialogue, the activities of the Group of Friends of Neutrality and practical steps to strengthen the Zone of Peace and Cooperation in Central Asia were highlighted.
