The pest, who scrawled the inscription “Ivan + Hayley 23” on the inner wall of the Roman Colosseum, was identified as 27 years old fitness instructor from Bulgaria Ivan Dimitrov, who lives in the UK, writes “Culturology”.
A foreign tourist scratching the inscription on the wall of one of the most famous monuments was filmed on his smartphone by another visitor. The video quickly spread on social networks, thanks to which the identity of the vandal was established, now the violator faces a fine of up to 15 thousand euros.
Italian Minister of Culture Gennaro Sangiuliano expressed his indignation at the fact of damage to a historical monument and stressed that he hopes that the laws will toughen punishment for such violations.
The Colosseum, used as an arena for gladiator fights, is almost 2 thousand years old. Its construction began in the 70s AD. After the collapse of the Roman Empire, the Colosseum fell into disrepair, in addition, medieval builders often used the stones from which it was built as building materials. Under the protection of the Colosseum was taken only in the XVIII century.
