FIFA has appointed an ethics and disciplinary prosecutor to look into the incident that occurred on the MetLife Stadium pitch immediately after the final whistle of the World Cup match between Argentina and Spain, bbc.com reports.

The match ended with a 1-0 victory for the Spanish team. After the final whistle, a brawl broke out between the players and coaching staff of the Argentina national team and the Spanish players. According to media reports, Nahuel Molina, Leandro Paredes, Thiago Almada, and assistant coach Roberto Ayala were spotted in the conflict.

It was previously reported that referee Slavko Vincic had sent off Paredes, but the red card was later overturned, and FIFA confirmed that no disciplinary action was taken against the player during the match. Another Argentina player, Enzo Fernández, was sent off for two yellow cards in stoppage time of the second half.

According to the FIFA Disciplinary Code, the actions of the players and delegation members may be considered a violation of the principles of fair play and standards of decent conduct, which may result in the suspension of individuals from football activities, as well as a fine against the Argentine Football Association (AFA).

FIFA had previously considered possible sanctions against the Argentina national team due to a banner the players held with the Falkland Islands logo after their semi-final victory over England.

The timeframe for completing the investigation into the incident after the final has not yet been determined.
