The England national football team beat Mexico 3–2 in the round of 1/8 of the 2026 World Cup, which took place in Mexico City.
The goals for England were scored by Jude Bellingham (36th and 38th minutes) and Harry Kane (60th, from the penalty spot). For Mexico, the goals were scored by Julián Quíñones (42nd) and Raúl Jiménez (69th, from the penalty spot). In the 54th minute, England defender Jarrell Quansa was sent off after receiving a red card for a rough foul.
In the quarter-finals, England will face Norway, who previously beat Brazil 2–1. The match will take place on 12 July.
Mexico became the second host nation to be knocked out in the round of 1/8; Canada had previously been eliminated from the World Cup after losing 0–3 to Morocco. The other host nation, the United States, will play their round of 1/8 match on 7 July against Belgium.
The England national team have reached the World Cup quarter-finals for the third time in a row: in 2018, they finished fourth, whilst in 2022 they were knocked out at the quarter-final stage. The Mexican national team, meanwhile, failed to reach the quarter-finals for the first time in 40 years – their best result at World Cups remains reaching the quarter-finals in 1970 and 1986.
The 2026 World Cup is being held in the USA, Canada and Mexico, with 48 national teams taking part for the first time in the tournament. The competition will conclude on 19 July; the reigning champions are Argentina.
