FIFA has banned plastic bottles and other containers from entering stadiums during the 2026 World Cup, Reuters reports.
Initially, the organizers allowed the use of empty transparent plastic bottles, but the rules were tightened at the last minute. Cups, cans, and tin containers were also banned. The restrictions were cited as a safety risk: organizers feared injuries from objects thrown from the stands.
"FIFA is committed to protecting the health and safety of all players, referees, fans, volunteers, and staff. The decision to ban bottles was made to prevent risks and injuries," the organization said in an official statement.
The new regulation has raised concerns among fans due to hot weather conditions: temperatures in some stadiums are expected to reach 26–28 degrees Celsius. Questions have also arisen regarding access to drinking water inside the arenas. FIFA has assured that the necessary measures will be taken to ensure spectator comfort.
The FIFA World Cup will be held from June 11 to July 19 in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. For the first time in the tournament's history, 48 national teams will participate instead of the traditional 32.
