On December 4, 2024, the 23rd meeting of the Turkmenistan-European Union Joint Committee was held in Brussels, attended by high-ranking representatives of both sides, the Turkmen diplomatic mission reported. The meeting was devoted to a wide range of bilateral cooperation issues, including trade cooperation, energy, environmental protection and humanitarian exchanges.
The delegation of Turkmenistan was headed by the Minister of Finance and Economy Serdar Jorayev, and the EU delegation was led by Luc Devigne, Deputy Managing Director for Europe and Central Asia at the European External Action Service. During the meeting, the parties discussed key areas of cooperation, including support for Turkmenistan's accession to the WTO, the macroeconomic situation, transport connectivity and digitalization.
The meeting participants paid special attention to the environmental agenda and energy cooperation. The issues of water resource management, reduction of methane emissions and prospects for the development of renewable energy sources were discussed. The Turkmen side presented its own vision of further steps in this area.
A significant part of the meeting was devoted to humanitarian cooperation, in particular, education and cultural exchanges. The European Union presented the possibilities of various programs, such as BOMCA and CADAP, and the delegation of Turkmenistan presented initiatives in the field of international academic cooperation.
At the end of the meeting, the parties stressed the importance of continuing the dialogue and strengthening bilateral relations. The Joint Committee meeting demonstrated the mutual interest of Turkmenistan and the EU in expanding multilateral cooperation in various areas.
