This year, an innovative UNICEF project on the reuse of purified water for the purpose of sustainable water resources management is being implemented in the UN building in Turkmenistan.

The system for pumping and cleaning already used water installed in the UN building permits for significant savings in the consumption of fresh water for watering green spaces.

UNICEF Turkmenistan shares land with 10 UN agencies, and the surrounding area requires regular watering and maintenance. It is estimated that between 14 000 and 17 000 litres of water are used for irrigation at the UN in Turkmenistan each year.

This comprehensive solution, which is already being actively used, will reduce the use of fresh water in the UN by 50% in summer and up to 90% in winter.

Re-purified water from car washing is used to water green spaces.

Boris Ter-Semyonov, Head of the Administrative Department of UNICEF in Turkmenistan noted the following:

“The world is facing growing climate challenges that affect Turkmenistan too. This project demonstrates the potential for implementing sustainable practices. It is a small initiative with far-reaching effects. We are not just saving water - we are investing in a green future”.

In addition to the environmental benefits, the project provides significant financial benefits, saving up to 72% of fresh water costs annually.

The installation of a wastewater pumping and treatment system in Turkmenistan is an example of sustainable investment in environmental initiatives, especially in arid regions. The project is in line with the overall commitment to combat climate change and achieve the Sustainable Development Goals, according to a UN press release.
