The National Commission of Turkmenistan for UNESCO discussed plans for the future

A regular meeting of the National Commission of Turkmenistan for UNESCO was held in Ashgabat under the chairmanship of the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan Rashid Meredov. The meeting was attended by heads and representatives of relevant ministries and departments of the country.

According to the press service of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan, a wide range of issues of cooperation with UNESCO were discussed at the meeting, and plans for interaction were outlined for the near future. Particular attention was paid to Turkmenistan’s proposals to include national values in the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

Rashid Meredov summed up the activities of the Interdepartmental Commission for UNESCO for the first six months of 2024 and outlined priority areas for further work. Information was also heard on the results of the work of the National Commission for the past period and tasks for 2024.

Among the important events, the 10th meeting of the National Commissions for UNESCO of the TURKSOY member states was held on May 16 in Ashgabat, following which the Final Document was adopted. During the first half of 2024, work was carried out to protect, study and conserve the Amul and Akdzhagala monuments, which were included in the World Heritage List under the nomination “The Great Silk Road: Zarafshan – Karakum Corridor”.

Particular attention was paid to joint efforts to include the national values of Turkmenistan in the UNESCO World Heritage List, as well as activities to identify, research and enter written monuments into the UNESCO Memory of the World register.

The meeting also discussed such current topics as strengthening the role of Turkmenistan in large structural divisions of UNESCO, expanding international scientific interaction, cooperation in digital projects and information exchange.
