A team of scientists from Japan's National Institute of Information and Communications Technology (NICT) has achieved an unprecedented speed of 402 terabits per second (Tbps). This is reported by gazeta.ru with reference to The Independent.

The new record speed exceeds the average UK broadband speed by five million times. At this speed, it is theoretically possible to download about 12 500 movies in one second, which demonstrates the enormous potential of this technology.

The key to success was the innovative technique developed by Japanese specialists. It made it possible to use previously inaccessible wavelength ranges, which significantly increased the capacity of the communication infrastructure.

Although the record was set under controlled laboratory conditions, the researchers are optimistic about the prospects for using this technology to transmit data over transoceanic distances.

Modern 5G networks can provide speeds of up to 10 Gbps, which is about ten times faster than 4G. However, the new achievement of Japanese scientists exceeds even these indicators by orders of magnitude, opening new horizons in the field of high-speed data transmission.
