US scientists have found that taking a dietary supplement with omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids can reduce aggression.
The study, published In the journal Aggression and Violent Behavior, included 29 studies examining the effects of recommended doses of omega-3 on aggressive behavior. The participants included 3 918 people, half of whom were children under 18 years of age. Follow-up lasted an average of 16 weeks.
The analysis showed a moderate but statistically significant decrease in aggression, both reactive and proactive. The effect was the same for different age groups, genders and experimental conditions (outpatient, clinic). On average, omega-3 reduced aggression by 26%.
Scientists see omega-3 supplements as an accessible tool for combating aggression. However, they emphasize that the study only assessed short-term effects. More work is needed to draw conclusions about the long-term impact. Snob.ru reports this.
