Scientists from Canada have proven that even a short break from using social networks can significantly increase self-esteem and improve the well-being of women. This was reported by “MP 24” with reference to Medical Xpress.

A study of 66 female students at the University of York found that those who stayed away from social media for a week felt better about their appearance and how they perceived themselves in the eyes of others.

The effect was especially noticeable among girls who tend to idealize thinness.

In addition to increased self-esteem, the participants in the “detox group” also began to lead a healthier lifestyle: they met with friends more often, went for walks, and played sports.

Psychology professor Jennifer Mills, one of the study's authors, attributes this effect to the fact that we are constantly bombarded with images of the “ideal” life on social media.

In the past, women devoted limited time to fashion and beauty, reading magazines that were published once a month or less. However, on social networks the flow of information is endless. New posts, photos and videos appear constantly, stimulating the brain's reward system and making you want to watch more and more.

Limiting our consumption of this content, even for a short period of time, permits us to reset and begin to appreciate ourselves for who we are.
