From April 3 to 4, the delegation of Turkmenistan took part in a regional meeting on monitoring the state of the cryosphere in Central Asia, which was held in Kazakhstan.

The Turkmen delegation included specialists from various structural divisions of the country’s Ministry of Environmental Protection, reports the publication “Turkmenistan: Golden Age”.

The meeting was an introductory event for a new five-sided project, launched with the support of the UNESCO regional office in Almaty.

As emphasized, among the planned activities is the study of snow, glacial and permafrost (glacial-nival formations) in conditions of climate aridization, their impact on the state of resources of transboundary rivers, a joint assessment of such “reserves” of fresh water for the region, the development of complex methods in this direction sustainable development and adaptation to climate change.

The new platform for cooperation is designed to promote scientific exchange.

Hydrometeorologists, water specialists, climatologists and ecologists from the five Central Asian countries will study the latest data, monitor the glaciers and snow caps of mountain systems in order to have a complete picture and predict future changes in the cryosphere that feeds the rivers.

The work to be undertaken involves the use of scientific research, technological advances and traditional knowledge to conserve mountain glaciers, testing and adapting known sustainable water conservation practices to the region.

During the meeting, representatives of Turkmenistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan created a basic structure for subsequent interaction, the source notes.
