Pediatrician Robert Wood of Johns Hopkins University says playing in the dirt reduces the risk of developing allergies and autoimmune diseases. This is reported by gazeta.ru with reference to Live Science.

According to the specialist, in the first years of life, the child’s immune system learns to distinguish “good” microorganisms from “bad” ones.

Digging in the ground promotes early contact of a child with various microorganisms. This helps: strengthen the immune system, protect against allergies, reduce the risk of developing autoimmune diseases.

However, the doctor warns that in places with poor ecology and polluted air, the dirt may contain toxic substances. Therefore, it is important to permit children to play only in a clean, safe environment.
