The young man was taken to Dundee Hospital with a severe sore throat. Doctors discovered a 2mm rupture in his trachea. The cause of the injury was pinching the nose and mouth while sneezing.
Doctors at the University of Dundee explained that when trying to suppress a sneeze, the pressure in the upper respiratory tract can increase 20 times. This can lead to serious injuries such as ruptured eardrums, aneurysms, and even broken ribs.
The victim did not require surgery. He was prescribed pain medication and seasonal allergy medication. The Scot's injury healed after five weeks.
Sudden throat rupture, medically known as “spontaneous tracheal perforation”, is rare but can be life-threatening. Only a few cases of such injuries are known. So, in 2018, a man in the English city of Leicester also received a hole in his throat while trying to stop sneezing.
