In Brazil, due to a catastrophic drought, the largest river in the world, the Amazon, has become shallow, writes the portal “WORLD 24”.

Water levels in South America's main waterway are at an all-time low. A state of emergency has been declared in the state of Amazonas; the largest city in the region, Manaus, is on the brink of disaster. Because the river became shallow, the city was almost cut off from the rest of the country, since it can only be reached by water - by boat or ferry. The line of cars trying to leave the city on ferries that were still operating stretched for a couple of kilometers.

In addition, problems began with fishing - the main occupation and way of earning money for the local population; the fish simply disappeared. Manaus and other small towns and communities along the banks of the Amazon are experiencing shortages of drinking water and food.

Forecasters' forecasts do not inspire optimism; according to them, drought and heat in the region will continue.
