Time Out has published the results of a study that identified the main gastronomic destinations on the planet. The first line of the prestigious rating was taken by the American city of New Orleans, located in the state of Louisiana, reports daily.afisha.ru.
The survey of more than 18 500 respondents praised New Orleans' unique culinary culture, which draws influence from French, Spanish, Vietnamese and African culinary traditions. Special attention was paid to iconic local dishes such as gumbo, jambalaya and beignets.
Second place in the ranking went to Bangkok, the capital of Thailand, which impressed survey respondents with its variety of gastronomic offerings, from fine dining restaurants with Michelin stars to street markets with affordable dishes costing as little as 3 USD.
The top three was rounded out by the Colombian city of Medellin, which received high marks for the availability of quality food and inexpensive coffee. Fourth place went to Cape Town in South Africa, famous for its rich cuisine with an emphasis on fresh seafood.
Fifth and sixth place in the top list were taken respectively by Madrid, noted for its “diverse” and “experimental” cuisine, and Mexico City, which has become a popular destination for gourmets from all over the world in recent years.
The top 10 also included Lagos, Nigeria, Shanghai, Paris and Jakarta. Other cities in the top 20 included Marrakech, Lima, Riyadh, Mumbai, Abu Dhabi, Porto, Montreal, Naples and San Jose.
