Earlier, we reported that a modern seismic station would be built in the new Turkmen city of Arkadag. Its creation will make it possible to quickly and accurately determine the hypocenters of earthquakes with the minimum possible error due to the appropriate choice of seismic sensors.
As the scientific secretary of the Institute of Seismology and Atmospheric Physics of the Academy of Sciences Svetlana Ahmedova said on the pages of the “Neutral Turkmenistan” newspaper, modern equipment at the station will permit automatic registration of seismic signals from natural and artificial sources of seismic vibrations in Turkmenistan and adjacent seismically active regions.
With the commissioning of the new station, Turkmen scientists will be able to refine the deep structure of the earth's crust and upper mantle of the region in order to build a velocity model to a depth of 300 km.
“In the city of Arkadag, the employees of our Institute are already carrying out the necessary seismic geophysical studies, which will be taken into account when developing a map of seismic microzoning. At the target sites, observations were made using “Tromino” tomographs. A new software package developed at the Institute is being implemented, which permits for the automated construction of models of the velocity structure of the near-surface strata using only digital records of the microseismic wave background”, - the scientist noted.
Within the framework of the implementation of the Decree of the President of Turkmenistan, the staff of the Institute prepared technical specifications for the construction of the station building in the city of Arkadag, as well as for the purchase and installation of the necessary equipment. The priority in the selection of equipment is the creation of a new generation seismic station equipped with digital seismic signal recorders.
The latest equipment will permit continuous recording of seismic events and a more stable system for tracking the exact time. The seismic station will become another important modern facility in the city of Arkadag, equipped in accordance with world standards, priorities and trends in the advanced technological development of this “smart” city of national importance.
