It took about 12 years for the world's population to go from 7 billion to 8 billion, but the next billion is expected to take about 14,5 years. UNFPA Population and Development Analyst Dovran Yamatov commented for the “Neutral Turkmenistan” newspaper.

The rise of the world's population to 8 billion is a moment to celebrate, he said. Behind this figure are the specific achievements of countries and peoples, including the reduction of poverty and huge successes in the field of health, reducing infant and maternal mortality.

“People are now living longer and maintaining their health. This is also a moment for reflection, it is time for humanity to go beyond the numbers and realize their shared responsibility to protect people and the planet”, - Yamatov said.

The UNFPA analyst also reminded that from December 17 to 27, a complete population census will be held in Turkmenistan.

“This will provide Turkmenistan with a unique opportunity to collect, disseminate and use disaggregated data for national strategic planning and policy development”, he stressed.
