The group stage of the third qualifying round of the 2022 World Cup has completed in Asia. As a result, 4 participants in the final stage of the tournament and 2 teams, that will play for the remaining ticket became known.
At the third stage 12 teams were divided into 2 groups of 6 participants. The teams, that finished in first and second places qualified for the 2022 World Cup. In group A the Republic of Korea and Iran were far ahead of everyone else. Group B was dominated by Japan and Saudi Arabia. The teams that have become third will play the junction – these are Australia and the United Arab Emirates.
In the last round in group A there was a struggle for third place, giving the right to play matches in the joint with the Australian team, which also took third in group B ahead of schedule.
As a result, Iran defeated Lebanon – 2:0, the UAE team beat the Republic of Korea – 1:0, and Syria and Iraq tied – 1:1.
Iran – is the first with (25 point), the Republic of Korea – is second with (23), and the United Arab Emirates is third with 12 points. Next came Iraq (9), Syria and Lebanon (6 each).
In group B, the matches of the 10th round were rather friendly and ended with the following results: Oman-China – 2:0, Saudi Arabia-Australia - 1:0, Japan-Vietnam – 1:1.
The Saudi Arabia team (23 points) won the group B, Japan scored 22 points, Australia – 15. Oman – 14 points, China – 6, Vietnam – 4.
At the moment 27 out of 32 participants in the final tournament are known. This is Qatar – the host team, representatives of the AFC – Iran, the Republic of Korea, Japan, Saudi Arabia, and also Serbia, Spain, Switzerland, France, Belgium, Denmark, the Netherland, Croatia, Germany, England, Poland, Portugal – from UEFA, Brazil, Argentina, Ecuador, Uruguay – from CONMEBOL, Ghana, Morocco, Senegal, Cameroon, Tunisia – from FAC and Canada – from CONCACAF.
Australia and the United Arab Emirates will play in the play-off semi-final on June 7, the winner of the pair will meet with the fifth qualifying team in the CONMEBOL zone (South America). Peru beat Paraguay (2:0) in the final round of the 2022 World Cup qualifiers in South America. The Peruvians took 5th place in the table and received the right to play in the play-off for reaching the final tournament against a team from Asia. Intercontinental play-offs are scheduled for June 13-14 in Doha.
