The Executive Committee of the Asian Football Confederation has approved a new format for holding club tournaments. From 2023, the AFC Champions League and AFC Cup will be held according to the “autumn-spring” system, reports the official website of the organization.
The transition is planned to be implemented from the 2023/2024 season. The season starts in the fall of 2023, but will end only in the spring of 2024. Accordingly, the clubs of Turkmenistan will start participating in the AFC competitions in autumn.
Everything on the issue of switching to a new system for the AFC Champions League and AFC Cup has been worked out since 2021. The AFC cites the possibility of synchronization with the rest of the football world in terms of transfers of players and signing of coaches, breaks in the championship and the timing of pre-season training as the main reasons for this decision by the AFC.
As a reminder, the AFC switched to the current spring-autumn format in 2004.
