Courses on human rights will be introduced in educational institutions of Turkmenistan. A detailed perspective was discussed by the participants of the seminar "International standards for human rights education programs", which was held in Ashgabat in an online format.
The seminar was organized within the framework of a three-year UNDP project “Assisting in the implementation of the National Action Plan for Human Rights in Turkmenistan for 2021–2025”, which is being implemented jointly with the Institute of State, Law and Democracy of Turkmenistan.
Aygul Kulnazarova, an international expert on human rights education, took part in the seminar.
It is expected that following the seminar A. Kulnazarova will provide recommendations on the implementation of new courses on human rights in undergraduate and graduate programs for the seminar participants - representatives of the Institute of State, Law and Democracy of Turkmenistan, the Ministry of Education of Turkmenistan, the Academy of Civil Service under the President of Turkmenistan, Magtymguly Turkmen State University, the Institute of International Relations of Turkmenistan and the International University of Humanities and Development of Turkmenistan.
Rovshen Nurmuhamedov, Head of the UNDP Program Department in Turkmenistan noted:
“While noting the importance of promoting human rights education, let me emphasize that the United Nations Declaration on Human Rights Education reaffirms the call made at the World Conference on Human Rights in Vienna in 1993 to all states and institutions to include human rights , humanitarian law, democracy and the rule of law in all educational institutions. Human rights education should include issues of peace, democracy, development and social justice, in line with international and regional human rights treaties, in order to achieve universal understanding and awareness of the need to strengthen humanity's commitment to the promotion and protection of human rights."
The introduction of new human rights courses in undergraduate and graduate programs at universities and institutions in Turkmenistan will contribute to the country's efforts to comply with its international human rights obligations and recommendations of the UN human rights treaty bodies, and will also accelerate the implementation of the Agenda for Sustainable development for the period up to 2030 in the country, according to a press release from UNDP.
