A patient spent six hours in an MRI machine due to a shift protocol violation at a Chinese hospital

At a hospital in Wuhan, Hubei Province, China, a patient was left inside a running CT scanner overnight. The incident was publicized after being reported in Mothership.

Late that evening, a man named Tang was scheduled for a scheduled MRI procedure, scheduled to last approximately 20 minutes. However, after that time, no one removed him from the machine. The patient refused to leave the scanner on his own because it was still running.

For several hours, the man cried for help. It wasn't until around six o'clock in the morning that a cleaner heard him and called security. By that time, Tan's wife had already filed a missing persons report with the police.

An internal investigation determined that the incident was caused by a violation of shift handover protocol. The doctor conducting the examination marked the procedure complete and left her workstation before the end of her shift, verbally warning a colleague about the patient. However, the colleague failed to verify that the man had been released from the machine.

The commission found the employees' actions to be a violation of established procedures. Those responsible were suspended from work. The hospital administration issued an official apology to the injured patient.
