Current UFC welterweight champion Islam Makhachev will face Michael Morales on July 12 as part of International Fight Week in Las Vegas, El Comercio reports.
Makhachev moved up to welterweight after years of dominance in the lightweight division (70.3 kg). During his time at lightweight, the Russian fighter won the UFC championship and set a record for most title defenses in that weight class—four in a row. The 34-year-old's most recent lightweight loss was Jack Della Maddalena. Makhachev was forced to relinquish his championship belt to move up.
By winning the welterweight title, Makhachev became the first Russian fighter in UFC history to become champion in two weight classes.
