New heights of English language education in Turkmenistan: a historic symposium

On March 3, 2026, a landmark symposium was held at the Dovletmammet Azadi Turkmen National Institute of World Languages, opening a new chapter in the history of the national education system. Entitled “Accelerating English Language Teaching in Central Asia: Implementing Inclusive Methodologies in the PRESETT Symposium,” the forum was dedicated to an innovative direction in English language teacher education aligned with international standards.

This event was not merely a scientific conference; it also served as a direct academic bridge between Turkmen educators and specialists from the globally renowned Nottingham Trent University. Organized within the framework of the Accelerating English Language Learning in Central Asia (AELLCA) educational project, the symposium’s opening ceremony was conducted at a high diplomatic and academic level. In his address, the Rector of the Dovletmammet Azadi Turkmen National Institute of World Languages emphasized that the forum represents a significant step toward advancing foreign language education in the country. The Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the United Kingdom to Turkmenistan, Stephen Conlon, also attended the event and underscored that education constitutes a fundamental pillar of bilateral relations, noting that the symposium would elevate cooperation to a new stage.

One of the symposium’s most distinctive features was that all presentations and discussions were conducted exclusively in English. This created an authentic international academic and methodological environment, enabling participants to test their professional competencies in practice. A representative of Nottingham Trent University, Martin Seviour, provided an overview of the symposium’s principal objective: enhancing professional standards in the preparation of future English language teachers (PRESETT).

The integration of international expertise with national initiatives formed the core of the symposium. Dr. Sarah Khan of Nottingham Trent University delivered a presentation on “Inclusive Methodologies in English Language Teaching,” highlighting the latest techniques employed on leading global educational platforms. Concurrently, members of the curriculum development working group of the Dovletmammet Azadi Turkmen National Institute of World Languages introduced newly developed academic modules and methodological manuals prepared in collaboration with Nottingham Trent University. These presentations contributed to the international recognition of Turkmen education and to the development of a national “educational model”.

The second half of the symposium was interactive and practice-oriented. Under the guidance of Martin Seviour and Dr. Sarah Khan, participating teachers were divided into small groups to analyze various inclusive teaching scenarios. They subsequently presented and defended their proposed solutions through large-scale poster presentations. During the concluding Panel Discussion and Q&A session, teachers from different regions of the country had the opportunity to establish direct academic engagement with international experts and receive answers to their professional inquiries.

Ultimately, this historic symposium became clear evidence of Turkmenistan’s active integration into the global educational community. The strategic emphasis of the PRESETT system, refining the competencies of prospective teachers before they formally enter the profession through the application of the most contemporary methodologies, signals the emergence of a new generation of innovative education professionals. The strategic partnership established with Nottingham Trent University provides a solid and reliable foundation for elevating the quality of English language education in Turkmenistan to a new international standard.
