Meizu may stop smartphone production

Chinese smartphone manufacturer Meizu plans to cease production of mobile devices in March 2026, according to the business publication Interface News, citing its own sources.

According to the publication, Meizu's parent company, the automobile concern Geely, has decided to cease investment in its smartphone business due to accumulated losses. However, the Meizu Auto division, which develops in-car information systems, will continue to operate as usual. The Meizu brand will reportedly remain under Geely ownership.

Signs of a crisis at the company emerged as early as May 2025: several top managers left Meizu, and the company experienced difficulties paying suppliers. According to IT Home, bankruptcy remains a likely scenario, but no official announcement has been made yet.

The situation was exacerbated by a shortage of components on the market. In January 2026, Meizu Marketing Director Wan Zhiqiang announced that the company was forced to cancel the Meizu 22 Air due to a component shortage. The flagship Meizu 23 smartphone, he said, would still be released.

Meizu is one of the pioneers of the Chinese smartphone market. In 2022, Geely acquired a controlling stake in the company, intending to develop an ecosystem between cars and mobile devices.
