A Russian man spent six months in court proving he was alive after a hospital error

Six months later, an Omsk resident successfully proved in court that he was alive after being declared dead in state databases due to a medical error. This was reported by RIA Novosti, citing the regional prosecutor's office.

In July 2025, a 62-year-old pensioner received a notification from the Gosuslugi government services portal that his account and bank cards had been blocked due to his death. When contacting banks and government agencies, he was also informed that he was listed as deceased in official registries.

The prosecutor's office determined that the error occurred at a medical facility. Hospital staff entered the pensioner's personal information into the deceased patient's medical record, after which a death certificate and other documents were issued in his name.

"Following the investigation, the prosecutor's office submitted a request to the medical facility and, in the interests of the 62-year-old man, filed a lawsuit to establish the legal fact of his survival, amend the death certificate, the original death certificate, and the death certificate, as well as seek compensation for moral damages in the total amount of 40,000 rubles," the prosecutor's office reported.

The court upheld the prosecutor's demands and declared the man alive. He was also awarded compensation for moral damages.

The Gosuslugi portal is a unified digital platform for accessing state and municipal services in Russia, through which citizens can interact with various government agencies electronically.
