Essential oil plants of Turkmenistan: Artemisia perovskia
Essential oil plants of Turkmenistan: Artemisia perovskia

Perovskia abrotanoides Kar. is a subshrub up to one meter high and is included in the list of essential oil plant species.

Two species of Perovskia are found in Turkmenistan: Perovskia and Koytendag Perovskia. Perovskia grows in western Turkmenistan in the Greater and Lesser Balkhan Mountains, Kurendag, Southwestern Kopetdag, and Central and Eastern Kopetdag. Perovskia is primarily found in Koytendag and its foothills.

The plant blooms from May to September, and the seeds ripen from June to October.

Perovskia artemisia has significant potential for use in the pharmaceutical, food, and perfume industries.

Its flowers and grass, harvested during the flowering period, are used as medicinal raw materials. It is known to contain 0.94–3.60% essential oil (camphor, limonene, cineole, thujone, cumene, etc.), saponins, alkaloids, coumarins, and flavonoids. The essential oil content is 1.75% per 57 g of dry weight.

Perovskia juice, oil, and essential oil extract have antibacterial properties.

Perovskia's aromatic, strawberry-like flavor makes it suitable for use as a flavoring agent in fruit preserves, confectionery, and soft drinks.
