Russian energy company PJSC “Gazprom” presented its expertise in the construction of underground gas storage facilities (UGS) at the International Conference "Oil and Gas of Turkmenistan - 2025".
Sergey Khan, Deputy Head of Department and Head of Administration at PJSC “Gazprom”, noted that the first work on the UGS facility began back in 1955. "This year, we celebrated the 70th anniversary of underground gas storage," he said.
According to Khan, over the years, more than 3 trillion cubic meters of gas have been pumped through underground gas storage facilities in Russia. "We currently have 27 storage facilities, with 73 billion cubic meters of operational reserves that we can extract during the winter. We also have a long-term, strategic reserve that we can extract in subsequent periods even without injection. This is necessary to ensure the reliable operation of the entire Russian Federation industry," he explained.
Khan emphasized that “Gazprom” is a global leader in underground gas storage and has extensive experience storing gas in various geological structures. "Gazprom PJSC companies have a full range of competencies and technologies for the construction and operation of underground storage facilities," he concluded.
Technical surveys are currently underway in Turkmenistan for the underground gas storage facility project, and consideration of specific proposals will begin soon, said Maksat Babayev, Chairman of the “Turkmengaz” State Concern, at a press conference following the OGT-2025 results.
As previously reported, Turkmenistan plans to build an underground gas storage facility at the former Odzhak gas condensate field, with an estimated capacity of 5 billion cubic meters of gas. The field is located in the northeastern part of the country, on the northern edge of the Zaunguz Karakum desert. It was discovered in February 1966, and development began that same year.
The International Conference and Exhibition "Oil and Gas of Turkmenistan 2025" (OGT 2025) was held in Ashgabat from October 22–24. Over 1400 delegates and enterprises from 70 countries, local energy companies, relevant ministries and industry agencies of Turkmenistan, and international organizations participated in the events. The forum was organized by the Turkmen Energy Forum, the “Turkmengaz” and “Turkmennebit” state concerns, and the “Turkmengeologiya” state corporation.
