Researchers have found that self-control and conscientiousness help in achieving goals

Researchers from North America have revealed a key mental factor contributing to success. According to a study published in the journal Current Opinion in Psychology, self-control and conscientiousness are the most effective characteristics for achieving goals, writes gazeta.ru.

Psychology professor Brent Roberts of the University of Illinois emphasized the difference between self-control and willpower. Contrary to popular belief, people with high levels of self-control do not spend more effort in restraining their desires. On the contrary, they plan their actions more effectively, permitting them to rely less on willpower.

Researchers note that attempts to increase willpower may lead to short-term improvements but rarely produce long-term results. Instead, self-control and conscientiousness manifest themselves in the ability to set long-term goals and move consistently toward achieving them while minimizing the impact of distractions.

While willpower helps to overcome momentary obstacles, its effectiveness diminishes over time. Therefore, to achieve success, it is recommended to build strategies that do not require constant application of willpower.
