A Certificate for assistance and contribution to the international initiative “Trees in Cities” was awarded to the Turkmen capital. The Deputy Prime Minister, Head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Rashid Meredov reported about this during the meeting of the Government held today, announced the news program “Watan” of the Turkmen television.

The certificate, issued by the Deputy Secretary General of the UN, the Executive Secretary of the EEC of this organization, is a document confirming the high appreciation of the work of the Turkmen people in protecting nature and, in particular, for conducting large-scale planting campaigns.

President Serdar Berdimuhamedov in this regard emphasized the productivity of long-term and multifaceted cooperation between Turkmenistan and the UN in the implementation of programs and projects aimed at achieving sustainable development on the planet, including ensuring a high level of environmental safety.

As noted, in accordance with the National Forest Program of Turkmenistan is carrying out systematic work in this direction at the country level. Within the framework of the implementation of this program more than 145 million tree seedlings have been planted in the country over the years, which has led to the emergency of special climate zones, and also contributes to maintaining an optimal climate and preserving nature in the region.

“We will continue to work on turning our country into a blooming garden, using advanced scientific achievements and modern technologies”, said Serdar Berdimuhamedov.

Let us remind you, that the International “Challenge: Trees in Cities” initiative, which provides for planting seedlings within the urban landscapes around the world, was first announced at the Climate Change Summit in New York in September 2019.

Turkmenistan supported the “green” initiative of the UNECE in the spring of 2020. In addition to the capital cities such as Turkmenbashi, Serdar, Kunya-Urgench, Dashoguz, Turkmenabat, Tejen, Mary, Gumdag, Hazar and Bayramaly joined this work.

According to the UN, at present time more than half of the world’s population, and by 2050 almost 70% of the world’s population will live in cities, which occupy only three percent of the land. Planting in large settlements help mitigate the effects of urbanization, create a comfortable and cozy living environment.
