A “Day of Silence” has come in Turkmenistan before the start of voting on the elections of the President of Turkmenistan on the 12th of May.

In accordance with the point 1 of the Article 63 of the Electoral Code of Turkmenistan, the agitation starts from the day of registration of the candidate and ends one day before the election day.

On the “Day of Silence” any agitation activities are considered to be illegal and lead to consequences for the candidate or electoral association in whose interests it is carried out.

Until March 10, all presidential candidates held meetings with voters in every region of the country, as well as in Ashgabat. During the meetings, they familiarized the electorate with their election programs, the vision of further development of the national economy, improving the welfare of the people and the authority of Turkmenistan in the world community.

In total, nine candidates for the post of President of Turkmenistan have been registered in the Central Election Commission. Three political parties have nominated their candidates. In addition, six candidates were nominated by initiative groups of citizens.

According to the Central Election Commission of Turkmenistan, all conditions for the free expression of citizens' will have been created at all 2,577 polling stations. In addition, 41 polling stations operate in foreign countries where embassies and consulates of the country are open.

The national and international observers monitor the elections.

In accordance with the Article 69 of the Electoral Code of Turkmenistan the voting on the election day, on the 12th if March, starts at 7 a.m. and finishes at 7 p.m.
