Figures and facts of environmental protection activities in Turkmenistan have been published

The newspaper "Neutral Turkmenistan" published figures and facts related to environmental activities in Turkmenistan, which we also share with our readers.


There are 9 nature reserves, 16 nature reserves and 17 natural monuments in the country, which occupy a leading place in the protection of biodiversity. More than 2/3 of the country's total biodiversity is concentrated in specially protected areas.


Operating network of specially protected natural territories (SPNA) Turkmenistan as of December 1, 2018 occupies 2,152,360 hectares, of which are:


  • reserves 42.98 %;
  • reserves — 49.73 %;
  • security zones — 5.32 %;
  • natural monuments-0.09 %;
  • environmental corridors-1.85 %;

As of January 1, 2020, Turkmenistan has signed and ratified 26 international environmental treaties and conventions.


In the field of integrated management of natural resources, Turkmenistan has adopted:


  • National strategy on climate change (new version);
  • National action Program to combat desertification in Turkmenistan;
  • Strategy and action plan for the conservation of Turkmenistan's biodiversity;
  • Program of works on rational use of water resources and increasing the capacity of the Karakum river in 2015-2020;
  • National Forest program of Turkmenistan until 2020.

Issues of sustainable land management and integrated water resources management are reflected in the National programs of socio-economic development of Turkmenistan.


In the field of environmental protection in Turkmenistan, as of 01.01.2020, 32 normative legal acts (laws and codes), 27 by-laws and 11 departmental normative legal acts have been adopted.
