The football used by Diego Maradona to score the famous "hand of God" goal in the 1986 World Cup quarter-final against England has sold at Heritage Auctions for 3,4 million USD, including fees.

The match took place on June 22, 1986, in Mexico City and ended with a 2-1 victory for Argentina. Maradona scored both goals in the match.

He sent the first ball into the goal with his hand, ahead of English goalkeeper Peter Shilton. After the game, Maradona described the goal as scored "partly by Maradona's head and partly by the hand of God."

The second goal went down in football history as the "goal of the century": Maradona beat several opponents, including the goalkeeper, and sent the ball into an empty net.

After the match, the ball ended up in the hands of Tunisian referee Ali Bin Nasser, who kept it for over 30 years. The ball's authenticity was later confirmed by independent experts, who compared marks and wear with photographs from the scene.
