Malaysia's prime minister underwent a medical procedure on his 79th birthday

The Malaysian government said Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim is undergoing a medical examination and procedure, after which he will remain under observation for two days, aljazeera.com reports.

On Monday, Senior Press Secretary Tunku Nashrul Abaida stated that Anwar was undergoing tests and procedures as recommended by a team of medical specialists. Details about the nature of the procedure were not disclosed.

"We pray that all matters related to the examinations and procedures of the Honorable Prime Minister will proceed smoothly and that he will be blessed with good health and will be able to return to his duties as usual in the near future, God willing," said Tunku Nashrul.

The announcement was made on Anwar Ibrahim's 79th birthday. He was born on August 10, 1947, and has served as prime minister since November 2022.

In January, Anvar underwent a routine medical examination, following which doctors stated that he was in good health and capable of continuing to perform his official duties as usual.

Anwar Ibrahim had previously been treated for back and shoulder problems. In June 2018, according to Reuters, he was hospitalized due to shoulder and back pain. The following month, he underwent spinal surgery in Istanbul and was also scheduled to undergo surgery on his right shoulder for a rotator cuff injury.

There was no indication that Monday's procedure was related to these previous health problems.
