On July 20, a high-level meeting of the UN General Assembly on improving global road safety was held in New York during the 104th plenary meeting of the 80th session of the General Assembly. Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs Ovezgeldy Kakalyev delivered a report on behalf of the Turkmen delegation.

The Deputy Minister expressed gratitude to the event's organizers—the Office of the President of the 80th session of the UN General Assembly—for the opportunity to present the measures taken in Turkmenistan to ensure road safety. He reaffirmed the country's continued commitment to the goals of the Decade of Action for Road Safety 2021–2030.

According to him, Turkmenistan views the problem of road traffic injuries not as a narrow departmental issue, but as a national and universal human issue requiring a systemic intergovernmental approach. He noted that road traffic injuries are a manageable risk, not a natural disaster, and stressed that the global community expects accelerated and coordinated action.

Among the measures taken in the country, the representative of the Turkmen delegation named the annual month-long campaign "Road Safety - Peace of Our Lives," held in September, as well as the national program for ensuring road safety, approved by a decree of the government of Turkmenistan. To implement this program, each ministry and agency has developed separate plans to reduce the number of road accidents.

He also reported that on April 11 of this year, Turkmenistan signed a law amending the Code of Administrative Offenses, which toughens penalties for violating traffic rules.

Speaking about international cooperation, the Deputy Minister noted that Turkmenistan cooperates with the World Health Organization, CIS countries, and the Asia-Pacific Centre for Road Safety, participating in events to exchange experience and strengthen the regulatory framework in this area.

In conclusion, the representative of Turkmenistan thanked the meeting participants and confirmed the readiness of the country's government, in particular the Ministry of Internal Affairs, to continue efforts to achieve its road safety goals.
