A representative of Turkmenistan spoke at the ECOSOC forum in New York

Perhat Yagshiyev, head of the Turkmenistan delegation, addressed the general debate of the High-Level Segment of the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) at UN Headquarters in New York; the session focused on accelerating action to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030. The press service of the Turkmen Foreign Ministry reported this.

As Yagshiyev noted, the development of cooperation with the UN and its specialized agencies remains a priority of Turkmenistan's foreign policy, and the maintenance of peace and stability is viewed as a necessary condition for sustainable development.

According to him, the country is consistently implementing the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development at the national level: 85% of the SDG targets have already been integrated into national and sectoral programs, and 131 national targets and 175 indicators have been approved.

The representative of Turkmenistan elaborated on issues regarding environmental protection, the sustainable use of water resources, and combating desertification, recalling the initiative of President Serdar Berdimuhamedov to establish a Regional Center for Combating Desertification for Central Asian states. Measures to develop the "green" economy and reduce methane emissions were also presented.

Yagshiyev also spoke about the city of Arkadag—the region’s first "smart" city, built according to principles of sustainable development and environmental safety and included in the OSCE project on developing climate-friendly cities.

Speaking on transport connectivity, the representative of Turkmenistan emphasized the importance of East–West and North–South transit projects—including the Trans-Caspian route—for strengthening the resilience of international trade.

At the forum, the delegation from Turkmenistan is also examining international experience in preparing Voluntary National Reviews; this experience will be utilized in the preparation of the country's third such review, scheduled for presentation in 2027.
