A delegation from Turkmenistan, led by Deputy Minister of Finance and Economy Perhat Yagshiyev, is participating in the High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development, held under the auspices of the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) at the organization's headquarters in New York. The forum runs until July 15, the press service of the Turkmen Foreign Ministry reported.
The High-Level Political Forum is the UN’s primary platform for reviewing the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
At the forum’s ministerial meeting on July 13, heads of UN bodies and civil society representatives delivered policy statements. ECOSOC President Lok Bahadur Thapa and UN Secretary-General António Guterres highlighted the need to reform the international financial system for the successful implementation of the 2030 Agenda.
The forum analyzes the implementation of the 2030 Agenda across several clusters of goals, including SDGs 6, 7, 9, 11, and 17. Participants paid particular attention to the issue of water scarcity—a topic that will be further addressed at the Global Water Summit taking place in Abu Dhabi in December.
Discussions also covered the energy transition, access to clean energy sources, the development of urban and industrial infrastructure, support for small businesses, and the reduction of the digital divide. The mobilization of financial resources within the framework of SDG 17 was identified as the systemic foundation for addressing these challenges.
A final document assessing global progress in implementing the 2030 Agenda will be adopted at the conclusion of the forum. Thirty-six states are presenting their Voluntary National Reviews (VNRs) at the current session.
Turkmenistan presented its Voluntary National Reviews (VNRs) in 2019 and 2023. Its current participation in the forum is linked to preparations for the presentation of the country’s third national review in 2027. As noted by the Turkmen delegation, the UN platform offers the country’s experts an opportunity to study international experience regarding the monitoring and implementation of SDG indicators.
